Tina Turner, along with Maya Angelou and Oprah Winfrey, stands as one of a triumvirate of powerful African American women who, in taking power, have themselves empowered a new generation.
There is a tendency for all stories to be remembered for just one thing. And with Ike and Tina Turner, what most people tend to remember is Ike’s violence. Yet the fact that this relationship also produced some of the most classic R&B live performances and recordings of all time is often forgotten or ignored.
The story of Ike and Tina Turner is not your run-of-the-mill story of overnight success and show business fame.
Ike and Tina Turner were part of a struggle by African Americans to see their contribution to American music culture accepted and rewarded in the same way as their white counterparts. The effort of that struggle exacted its price on both Ike and Tina, and for many reasons, in the end it seems that Ike was less able to deal with the price than Tina.
This show is not an authorised biography; nor does it pretend to cover the whole story of a complex relationship that spanned 20 years. Both Ike and Tina have told that, in their respective autobiographies. It is simply a tribute to two giants of popular music, told with love and respect.
